There's
too much information today--and with health information,
it's outright confusing or even a complete lie. My e-News
grows each month...now hundreds around the US and in other
countries. What can I say different and bring to the health
table with clarity? I keep things VERY simple. To the
point. I create awareness and deep thinking in people that
can spark change...many times personal revolutions that
spread through families, corporations, and organizations.
So Comrades...let's THINK about health SIMPLY. Together we
can change America...and the world one body at a time.
Fitness and sweat--universal languages for ALL. Oh...don't
sit around and "think" too long because you need to
MOVE NOW!

Today's News: "Child Obesity Changes, Tim Russert,
Insured Americans on Dope"
Good
news! Child obesity has finally hit a plateau after 25 years
of soaring higher than the space shuttle. But
wait! Before you feel warm and fuzzy, think about "the rest
of the story" which is that 32% of American kids are
still overweight if not totally obese. We have
absolutely nothing to brag about concerning our kids and
weight. Don't be fooled! Case in point--some empirical
evidence I see daily. While driving by a bus stop in Ventura,
CA (one of "the" healthiest places to live in America for
outdoor activity), I observed five teenagers. Four of them
were obese. It could be the same in any city in America.
Change it.
We are exercising more as a nation--this I observe and believe
to be true. Reports are emerging as well to support our
increase in exercise...we are finally on the move more than in
recent years. Keep up the good work, and let's fix the rest
pronto!
News commentator Tim Russert--gone at only 58!
A so-called tragic "heart attack" was reported with shock
and awe. I was skeptical, and sure enough, he was on heart
medication because he put doctors in charge of his health
instead of taking personal responsibility for how own. He
was clearly overweight and did not look healthy.
When are we going to realize
that "we cannot medicate ourselves to health!"
All the great words about his Dad Big Russ, and Tim never
came close to living as long as his Dad...what a shame. I
liked Russert. He seemed like an honorable man. One of
respect for his elders and American tradition. Sadly, he
self-selected to an early death. My tribal brother Steve
Ilg had a great view on this death and others like it,
"Your heart is not "attacking" you...you've been
Attacking your poor heart for decades, if not longer! What
is your poor heart SUPPOSED to do?" What a
simple yet brilliant interpretation! No wonder the pharma
companies don't want Steve Ilg as a spokesperson!
Read the full critical viewpoint from a health and
prevention standpoint @ NaturalNews.Com.
Rather disturbing news broke recently that 51% of
"insured" Americans are taking medication...or let's just
say it like it is...on dope. Hyperbole?
Hmmm...most of the health problems Americans have are
preventable and lifestyle related; therefore, in reality,
most the crap people take is not natural or really needed
at all if they would just eat properly and get a little
exercise. What people are taking as "mandatory
medications" sounds like dope to me. And...this is
just the "insured" people! The less fortunate have even
less health prevention measures, so I'm sure some of them
are using meds as well even though paying for it
themselves. Read my full scale drug-culture assault below
entitled Americans on Dope!

Gut Check! "Stupidophilus Yogurt"
This
month's Gut Check! by Kevin Rail is
on the slimy world of yogurt RIP OFFS! Companies are quick to
jump on the band wagon of increased health awareness at the
expense of ethics and providing authentically nutritious
food. Example? "Healthy" low-fat food loaded with SUGAR i.e.
many current yogurts! More? Kids' breakfast cereals loaded
with sugar being advertised as "healthy" ways to start the day
and increase scholastic abilities. Yeah..nothing like a good
'ol American sugar fix to start the day! But for now, Kevin
rips away the sugar coated BS on yogurt? What remains? Just
the good stuff...and that's no bull!

Fit-4-Life Kids: "Moderation"
I
don't deny my twins treats on special occasions. However,
"routine" ice cream and such is not part of our family
culture. Moderation is a key point to teaching your kids
balanced nutrition--and yourself! Parents that force the
"tofu tough love" are asking for disaster. Great example! My
twins like occasional ice cream--but not with all the extra
sugary crap on top. They actually refused ice cream with the
extras at a recent party because they said it was not "healthy
ice cream." Profoundly funny I thought--but true. The
students became the teacher again for Coach RJ! Live healthy
as a daily behavior--just don't forget some occasional
moderation because that's good for health too! |
Fat Attack:
"Wendy's Roasted Turkey & Swiss Frescata"
All turkey sandwiches are not created equal--and some are
NOT healthy! Wendy's Roasted Turkey & Swiss Frescata
has a surprising 1,100 calories,
40 GRAMS OF FAT!, and 1,950 mg of sodium.
Half the calories an "adult" needs for the day and a full
day's supply of sodium. Butt removal? About
two hours of "hard" workout. Consumption time for many fast
eating Americans? About 7-10 minutes. Not a good equation of
work per minute of face feeding! And if you add the soda and
fries...then maybe you should just ask for delivery while on
the treadmill or in your Spinning class because you'll be
there most of the day working it off! (Source: Eat This. Not
That!) |
Nutrition Nibble: "Vision Health & Lettuce"
Carrots are cool for helping your eyes, but don't forget the
spinach or romaine lettuce because these lutein loaded leafy
friends help reduce macular degeneration. (Source: Eat This.
Not That!) |
Mental Skills Training: "Flow...Just Do It!"
My
twins joined the swim team. They are only four. We
encourage them to have fun. Wife Candas is the coach for 6
and under. Son Cade ripped off the blocks at the first meet
and froze half way across--he "messed up" his start and
wanted to go back and do it again. He was quickly left
behind then realized his slightly messed up start got even
worse. The babysitter had to dive in and drag him out of
the pool while he screamed and cried. Not good! I
conferred with "the coach" as a concerned parent. We came
up with a strategy. Work on no stress starts in practice.
Encourage "flow" which means JUST DO IT! When you
think too much as an athlete, you lock up and can't flow.
Flow State can also be referred to
as "The Zone." Meet #2! Cade
jumped in and ripped across the whole pool in two events.
Eager teammates awaited on the other side for well-deserved
high fives!
If your kids "mess up" a bit, it's not the end of the
world! Another example...while racing a bike criterium
once, I witnessed a father screaming and humiliating his son
because the little boy accidentally got into the wrong age
group heat. Bike races are confusing--even for adults! It
was easy for a young child to make a mistake. The poor kid
probably never raced a bike again! I was horrified that day
by this butthead Dad, and it still bothers me!
So...encourage fun and flow while providing good quality
coaching, and good performance will follow...along with
ENJOYMENT!

Amazing Body Fact! "Intestines"
Your intestines would be 26 feet long if you stretched them
out at full length! And guess what, EVERY SINGLE
INCH is important for keeping you alive with "optimal" health.
It's absurd to think that modern medicine can "cut out
sections" of your intestinal system just because you refuse to
stop eating so much food! If you think cutting out part of
your system is an "easy" fix for weight loss, I'm here to
inform you that is is NOT. Remember, nature put 26
feet in there for a reason--YOUR OWN HEALTH!

Wellness @ Work: "Building Foundation"
After three hard years in corporate as a full-time
Wellcoach, I've got my process wired. What works and what
does not. For me, it's keeping it simple. I'm a fitness guy,
so I approach corporate wellness from a "movement" standpoint
with exercise. What can I do in the least amount of time to
do the most amount of "movement" good? First get in their
heads (psychology) and make sure they know I
have something that they can be successful at if trying--My
Dynamic Warm-Up. It's simple--body weight
only. In just five minutes a day, I've changed lives. For
the first time in decades, some of my clients felt
"improvement" in their bodies instead of a spiraling loss of
control. This is HUGE! It's the spark that
creates flame. At any age, weight, and level of
fitness and ability, my DWU can move most people better with
less pain.
Get an employee moving better with less pain while feeling
better mentally, and you get their attention quick. Most
are then receptive to trying other types of movements and
listening to other points being made regarding nutrition,
wellness, stress management, etc. Once they move better
with less pain, I go after core stabilization
to protect their spines. All the above is the basic
foundation for developing what I call, "High-Performance
Health."
With a strong mental and physical foundation, then you can
rev it with clients using High Intensity Interval
Training (HIIT) and other "After-Burn" EPOC
workouts like kettlebells and circuit training.
It's been an amazing journey to see my clients go from obese
to fit in just three years...pretty cool for a Wellcoach.
For those thinking that prevention is not worth the
investment, think again! The current numbers are
3.5-5.5:1. For every $1.00 invested in wellness,
your company or organization can get a return on investment
(ROI) of $3.50 to $5.50. On top of the financial
savings, you also increase productivity while decreasing
dead weight at your company called "presenteeism."
Wellness kicks ass! Get your company healthy and fit
and ye shall reap the High-Performance rewards!

above:

Prevention." --Ron Jones |
ECO Health: "Yosemite Corporate
Hikes"
I
just returned from my 2nd Annual Yosemite Falls Summit
Corporate Hike in California. Do you want to inspire others
to think about being green and protecting our environment?
Try "ecotherapy" by taking them on the wilderness trails. As
John Muir once said, "...it's the clearest way into the
universe..." Not only are lives changes towards wellness, but
people gain more awareness and respect for nature and life
itself in so many enriching ways. The corporate hikes have
been one of the most successful tools I've used the last three
years with clients to give them true High-Performance Health.
Try the trail--you'll like it!

Cool Tools: Kettlebells
Yeah, I know I covered these in brief last month, but I'm not
done yet! Like many in my business, I too am being
"re-educated" by the amazingly simple Russian Kettlebell
(KB). Here are some valid points to consider if you're
interested in KBs along with other tips.
Get proper training from someone that really knows KBs!
Kettlebells are NOT dumbbells or Olympic weights or
machines. They are used in a completely different way. DBs
are dead compared to KBs being alive is how I'm explaining
them. I was fortunate to study with Delaine Ross
(Gym Condition in Atlanta) and David "Iron Tamer"
Whitley from Nashville. I've had KBs for years yet
no proper training, so I rarely picked them up because
I didn't know how to use them!
For written info, I've developed some killer handouts the
last few weeks and am using this format to train my
corporate clients on the safe and effective use of KBs.
Pavel's "Enter the Kettlebell" video is also a must for any
serious Comrade! My KB mentor David Whitley also just
released his new video--see below for more details.

WELLaware: "Dessert Necessity?"
I was driving home from my corporate hike in Yosemite last
month and noticed a large Marie Callender billboard mandating
to Americans that "Dessert is not a treat. It's a
necessity." Applying some critical thinking for
about one second, I quickly realized this message was
total crap...or rather, BS! And of course, returned for a
photo and story opportunity! View
(THINK) the "full" billboard from the front of the fat wars
now! |
Rock Report! "Power Cords Ride Again"
Like fitness, what was old is now new again! One of the
latest "new" sounds in rock is a throw back to the 70s guitar
bands that were heavy with power cords and simple
lyrics--basically just a lot of fun. Two of these bands I
really love are Year Long Disaster and
Soulshake Express. The lead guitarist for
YLD is the son of Dave Davies--lead guitartist for The Kinks.
I'm a HUGE Kinks fan, so YLD is definately on my playlist for
action! Soulshake Express is from Sweden. Another awesome
band that is kicking serious arse! There is NO foo foo with
these new bands. Just ripping power cords that flex some
electronic fitness. If y'all want some great workout music
with simple and clean lyrics, check these two bands out. They
are both on my favorite list and make great workout tunage! |
Right To Hike Foundation
One of the most horrific experiences of my life was earlier
this year when Georgia's Trail Goddess Meredith
Hope Emerson was brutally tortured, murdered,
and decapitated while hiking on New Year's Day. Even today,
it makes me sick to even think about it--very emotional. It
ripped my own family in half. We were heavily involved in
organizing the Remember M.E. Memorial Hike in
late January.
I'm pleased to announce that the hiking community has once
again taken a STAND for hiker's rights to hike freely on the
trail in health and fitness. A new non-profit hiking
foundation has been formed in the honor of Meredith and for
increasing hike and trail safety. While sprouting in
Georgia, I'll predict it goes national. Great
positive energy cannot be contained. Help spread
the word to save and protect our trails for our families and
others!
If you would like a great hiking safety check list I created
now being used by some search and rescue teams and other
groups, see my
Day Hiking Trip Checklist.
Yes, M.E., we DO REMEMBER you...always will.

"Americans on Dope"
51% of "insured" Americans are now taking
prescription drugs to treat "at least" one chronic health
problem. There is NO excuse good enough for this
state of illness in our country! We are
disintegrating as a nation from the inside out. No amount of
Nintendo, big screens, and Escalades can save us from our own
obesity and inactivity.
Emerson once wrote, "The first wealth is health." If he's
right, then we are not wealthy at all in this country--we are
poor.
America is predicted to be bankrupt in ten years because of
failing health if we do not make drastic changes i.e. start
living healthier to PREVENT chronic and expense diseases. The
above statement of fact is not my personal assessment--it came
from David Walker, the U.S. Controller General who is
basically the CPA of the United States. When seeing him
personally as a key note speaker in Washington DC at a health
care reform conference where I was presenting this last
December, he said quote, "We are betting the farm on
healthcare reform. If we don't do it, we'll be bankrupt in
ten years." Don't believe me?
Read the full story on 60 Minutes for yourself.
So once again, get with the program...while we still can.
I have not missed one single workout of "at least" 30 minutes
for over 500 days straight. For those of you
that think that's crazy or think of me as an unreasonable
zealot, think again after you read the 60 Minutes report
above? So who is really being extreme here? Me being healthy
or millions who refuse to take personal responsibility for
their own health and well-being thus putting the very future
of America in jeopardy? How many workouts have you done in
row the last week? I don't make excuses. I get it
done--period. I will NOT be part of the problem.
I'm part of the solution. Are you?
Save America by saving yourself first!

Product Review: David "Iron Tamer" Whitley
Full Body Power KB
Workshops
I just completed David's "Full Body Power"
advanced KB workshop at Delaine Ross' Condition KB Gym in
Atlanta. It was the absolute best $$$ I ever spent on fitness
education at a full-day seminar or conference! Special thanks
to Delaine Ross too because without her expert start up, I
might not have survived six hours of Iron Tamer!
David's workshop was thorough and challenging. I was by far
the least experienced in the group with KBs, yet David was
able to make quick adjustments with me and anyone else in the
group to keep things not only safe but effective. He is
extremely knowledgeable about not only kettlebell training,
but human biomechanics. He was able to perform specific
mobility drills with a few students struggling with certain
moves that enabled them to complete the drills within just a
few minutes of his adjustments. Everyone in the group was very
positive about the experience.
I've been in the fitness business for over a
decade--David is one of the best I've ever worked with and
that is no BS! If you get the opportunity to
work personally with David "Iron Tamer" Whitley--DO IT! You
won't be disappointed!
If you can't study with David personally, fear not! He just
released his Full Body Power DVD which
summarizes the workshop that rocked Coach RJ's
ass--literally! My butt was sore for days! I enjoyed
the pain and thanked him later--so can you!
Check out David's Full Body Power Kettlebell DVD
here--then rock your world the hard
core Iron Tamer way!
He's also got a cool circuit KB video out with 11 and 20
minute workouts. Think you can't get a real workout in 11
minutes? Then you haven't met David "Iron Tamer" Whitley or a
kettlebell yet! You can learn more about David and
other products at his website:
