Healthy
March to y'all! Lots of new energy to report this month. Fit
friend and fellow Wellcoach Kevin Rail joins me to launch a
new monthly column appropriately called "Gut Check!" Kevin
will help us all cut through the hype and devious advertising
behind food and nutrition. Kevin and I are like minded--we
are straight up with health and fitness. That's how we
"role." WELLcome to the High-Performance Health Team Kevin!
I'm launching my first ever workshop series this month with
the best of what I've got from the last decade of saving
America. My 'Move Better' U.S. Tour 2008 starts in March.
See below for more details! I can feel the positive
acceleration developing for health and corporate wellness--and
it's about time...Fear not!
Health is something to SHOUT about! |

Ron Jones 'Move Better' U.S. Tour 2008!
FINALLY!
I've been wanting to do this for years! I'm tired of seeing
so many people wasting so much money and being in so much
pain--and for NO good reason! I've developing a reputation
for keeping things simple yet effective. I've got so much to
share that can help people be healthy and move better. NOW is
the time. Primary objectives are back pain prevention,
optimizing human performance whether athletic or causal
exerciser, and as always, promoting WELLNESS with simple
performance-proven methods. From corporate to collegiate
football--I've helped them all! My workshops will be
covering:
- Mental Skills Training
- Dynamic Warm-Ups
- Core Training
- High-Intensity Interval Training
I've been able to fix most backs and shoulders in just a
few minutes per week instead of drugs, surgeries, and wasting
thousands treating symptoms instead of root causes! Topics
will vary slightly depending upon city and audience. First
stops this year are Atlanta, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Paso
Robles, and Park City. See
more info on the 'Move Better' U.S. Tour 2008!
Fitness is Power...Let's Get It On! |
Today's News: "Wasting Billions on Back Pain, Retirement
& Health, and Contaminated Lemon Slices!"
Major
news broke last month about how Americans are literally
wasting BILLIONS on back pain treatments!
Our medications, surgeries, and clinical treatments have
failed miserably to decrease back pain. The research
indicated that our back pain is actually worse even though we
are spending more money with better technology! I can fix
most people's back pain in just a few days to a few weeks and
with only a few minutes per week! Another good reason for me
to start doing workshops so I can teach people how to fix
their own backs and STOP wasting money on treatments that are
not helping!
Additionally, other national reports predicted that
MOST Americans will NOT have the same standard of living in
retirement. Why? Because of soaring healthcare
costs. I've been saying this for years--are you listening
yet? Our healthcare system is breaking! It's not even
healthcare anymore--it's SICK care. It's time for a
change--and NOW not later!
A very disturbing report emerged about the contamination
with those "tasty" lemon slices we get in our restaurant
water and tea! Most have been found to be highly
contaminated with fecal matter, staph bacteria, and other
bugs you don't want to be ingesting. How upsetting
because I would put 2-3 in my glasses! I've always wondered
how clean those things were when looking into the lemon
bins...they looked sort of aged and wilted to me and
possibly not clean. They are NOT! The public accessible
lemon trays are open prey to someone coming out of the
bathroom without washing their hands then digging into the
lemon bin. Behind the counter lemons are thought to be
contaminated from improper employee hand washing and using
knives that were not cleaned after cutting up meat. So much
for lemon slices--I'm not going there anymore!

Gut Check! "Smoke & Mirrors"
This
is the first of many articles by Kevin Rail. In "Smoke &
Mirrors" Kevin explores the treacherous journey through the
deadly jungles more commonly known as American supermarkets
and fast food lines! Eating healthy is simple--not
complicated once you weed through all the hype and deceptive
advertising. Fear not! Kevin's going to help us get
started!

Fit 4 Life Kids: "Fat Food Marketing to Kids"
I
was eating a salad at the Roadhouse Grill after football
practice last fall and noticed a Bike Give-a-Way program they
had for local children. On the surface, it looked like a nice
community service project for the restaurant...until I started
"THINKING" about what they were doing. They
were giving free coupons for kid meals. If the kids came in
to eat, they got to register for the free bike. When I
investigated into their kid menu items, it was NOT
good...here's what a Roadhouse Grill in California is feeding
kids for good behavior:
- Hamburger
- Hot Dog
- Grilled Cheese
- Macaroni & Cheese
- Steak Tips
- Chicken Tenders
With rewards like this, the Roadhouse Grill will be hurting
for customers because today's kids will be dead by the time
they are my age or too unhealthy to get off the couch! Sorry
Roadhouse Grill--this is not good for our kids or our
country. Please keep your junk food and deceptive advertising
on the premise of "good community service" away from my
family! |
WellPRO: "Ronnie Jones"
This
month's WellPRO is my youngest daughter Ronnie. Her
generation is predicted to be very sick and unhealthy because
of obesity and lack of fitness. Ronnie's health will help her
to lead the next generation of Americans--from a position of
fitness and not fat! At age four, she's already more fit and
more aware of health than many adults!
Read Ronnie's words of wellness wisdom and her expert advice
on staying fit and fun. |
Fat Attack! "Chipotle Chicken Ciabatta"
Not all chicken sandwiches are created equal! The Jack
in the Box Chipotle Chicken Ciabatta (with grilled
chicken and medium natural cut fries) actually has
1,140 calories, 51 grams of fat, and 3,000 mg of sodium.
Not exactly anything to "cluck" about! With 1,140 calories,
you might want to drive right on by Jack in the Box
then grill your own chicken at home! |
Nutrition Nibble: "Cheap Food?"
I was chatting with my good friend and restaurant owner Joe
Coughlin last month. Joe has been serving up healthy menu
items for years and long before the obesity epidemic alerts
were hitting national news. He said with the ailing economy,
his business is down about 20%, and people are spending less
on eating out and maybe opting for the typical fast foods that
are "cheaper." I had a profound thought--and a hell of a
marketing idea that I immediately expressed to Joe--cheap
food is NOT cheap! What kind of value is to eat
thousands of calories and hundreds of grams of fat for just a
few bucks when the end result is expensive medical
complications and diseases?!!! I told Joe that if people ate
at his Coconut Joe's Island Grill House, they can essentially
eat for free compared to typical fast food because his food is
healthy and won't kill them or make them sick! Think about
it..."cheap" food is not really going to be cheap in the long
run. Pay now or pay later. When dining out, it's a much
better value to buy "real food" at a decent restaurant than to
eat "toxic food" full of chemicals. Heart disease, diabetes,
obesity...some "value" that is!!! See y'all at Coconut Joe's
where I'll be eating my lean chicken wrap! |
Mental Skills Training: "Multi-Tasking"
In American culture, we have mistakenly grown to view
multi-tasking as the trait of highly successful people.
From the perspective of performance psychology, I'm here to
say that multi-tasking is not optimal performance. The
brain can only process so much information at one time--or
at least process well with optimal performance. I've
noticed upper-level managers in meetings or while at
conferences trying to attend to the spoken topic while also
using a Blackberry to read e-mail, text message, take a cell
call, or whatever else they do with them. As a psych guy,
I've watched these people "zone out" and completely miss
valuable information being presented!
The scientific term explaining our limitations for
performing multiple tasks is called " Attentional
Capacity." Simple tasks allow for brain space to
attend to more than just one thing, but more complex tasks
require more focused attention on the primary objective. I
use this psych principle with sport training all the time.
Too many people are decreasing overall performance from lack
of focus. In some situations, this can be dangerous. I
routinely observe people that cannot do anything without
being distracted by a phone or text message. Do that in an
industrial task, or while driving, and it might cost you
your life or the life of someone else. Focus on what is
critically important--then filter the rest out for optimal
performance and safety. Learn more on
Mental Skills Training.

Amazing Body Fact! "Shoulders"
The shoulder is the only joint in your body with 360
degrees of full rotation. While we routinely refer
to our "shoulder sockets" when discussing shoulder pain, the
shoulder joint area is not a socket at all. It's actually
almost flat with only the slight curve of a golf ball tee.
The "socket" of the shoulder joint is nearly flat to allow for
greater mobility. However, the increased mobility gives the
shoulder less stability and less control of movement. |
Wellness @ Work: "Back Pain & Injuries"
Back pain is the #1 cause of insurance claims for
many companies. If your company is waiting around
for someone to hurt their back before getting help, they are
way behind the curve. Most back pain is NOT fixed by surgery
and the Western approach--this approach has made our backs
worse and more expensive to fix!
Boeing did an interesting study on back claims--their #1
injury. The primary factor in Boeing's back pain
claims? Psychological stress! This is
proof that fixing America does not lie with biomechanics and
data alone. If it was just a workout plan and ergonomics,
many more would be doing it! As a Corporate Wellcoach, I know
both exercise science and psychology which is why my "fitness"
programs work so much better. For optimal wellness @ work,
use a balanced approach that helps employees on all levels of
mind, body, and spirit. |
ECO Health: "Affluenza"
I ran across the book Affluenza last
year while waiting 14 hours in the Atlanta airport. I had no
idea what it was about at first glance. This book has
drastically changed my life and how I look at my own
contribution to either making the planet a healthier place to
live or continuing to make it less healthy with senseless
consumerism. The book challenged me to think about my home
recycling, my purchases, my values on "things" and how I look
at them. Since reading Affluenza, I doubled my
home recycling and use reusable cloth shopping bags about 99%
of the time. If you want to really start
thinking about America's over consumption and the effects on
global ecology, read this book.
See the Affluenza book link here. |
Health & Hygiene: "Phone Funk"
Cold and flu season is upon us.
When was the last time you cleaned your nasty cell
phone? Maybe never! Think about how
many times you slobber, cough, spit, and sneeze on your
phone! Studies show that cell phones are carrying significant
amounts of bacteria because they are not being cleaned. Grab
a Clorox or Lysol wipe--clean your phone NOW!
After cleaning wipe off the chemical residue with a clean
towel then you'll be good to go. |

Cool Tool: "Ankle Bands"
For
about $3.00, many people can fix their own knee problems!
This little ankle band is the best tool for increasing hip
"abductors" which help prevent legs from caving in or
adducting to center during movement. They come in different
thicknesses to match your strength capability. I use bands
made by PerformBetter. Check
out the cool ankle bands here. |
On the Road with Coach RJ
I'll
be at the American College of Sports Medicine Health/Fitness
Summit in Long Beach March 24th-27th getting the latest on
corporate wellness, health, and fitness research. I'm also
launching my training workshops this month, so I'll see
y'all on the road! |
Next Month...April.08!
I
don't know yet, but it will be good because health is
ALL GOOD! And no side effects like prescription
drugs and junk food! I'm taking corporate clients to Yosemite
again this May and doing a training hike series with
them--I'll introduce you to them in April and more as soon as
I make up my mind. So much health news and so
little time! |
Please pass along my Coach RJ Health e-News
to people interested in High-Performance Health.

Fast Fitness!
"Band Walks"
Many knee injuries occur because of weak
hip stabilizers that allow the knee to go out of position.
Strap a simple ankle band on then walk laterally. This simple
yet effective exercise is a great way to improve hip stability
and decrease knee injuries--and all in just a few minutes per
week!
