Revolutionary Georgia Family
History
I have a rich family history in Northern Georgia. One of my Great Uncles named Stephen Heard was the President of the Executive Counsel of Georgia from 1780-1781. Grandpa Heard was a member of the Whig party. He built Heard's Fort in the area of Washington, Georgia in 1774 located in Wilkes County. The original site of Heard's Fort was listed as Sandtown. Heard's Fort was named February 3, 1780 as the temporary Revolutionary capitol of Georgia and remained in this capacity until early 1781. The Fort was located near the historic Battle of Kettle Creek in 1779. There are no remains of Heard's Fort today but I hope to explore the area soon and take some photos of the general Heard's Fort area. The Heard family originally came from Ireland and settled in Virginia before moving to Georgia.
