"The
Health Dudes" With Norm Hoffman & Ron Jones "The
Health Dudes" was a really cool radio show Norm and I created back in
1996.
Co-Hosting this show together were some of the best memories Norm and I had together. We had so much fun doing something that was so important. The Health Dudes sought to make health and fitness accessible and fun for everyone. We would begin each show discussing health and fitness issues that had been in that week's media. We tried to make health and fitness information easier to understand--and thus more practical to use. We had a variety of guests in our studio--from a clinical psychologist discussing female athlete eating disorders to a plastic surgeon friend of ours discussing cosmetic surgery, tattooing, and body piercing...and many others. We ALWAYS had fun with this show. We did more laughing that should have been legal. We had hoped to grow with the show. However, we didn't have enough time to keep soliciting sponsors, so we went off the air in early 1998. A year or so after the original Health Dudes went off the air, I asked Norm to help me with a another edition of the Health Dudes for Public Health Week 1999. We put together a special show in association with the Kern County Department of Public Health and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Service-Learning Program. We came up with eight important community health issues then asked kids in our community from kindergarten to high school to come up with a plan for informing the public and ideas for how to improve health in their topic areas. Each one of the eight groups of kids went live on the air with us for about ten minutes to discuss their topics. The photos below are from that special show at the Bakersfield City School District office in April of 1999. We had so many kids and parents, we had to do a live remote show at the BCSD Office. It was great fun and Norm loved it. The kids felt good about being heard and having a voice in our community. The project truly reflected the community spirit for health that Norm gave us for over 35 years in Bakersfield. Home | Share the Road | Site Map (Updated 12.10.07) |
