Honeymoon We left on our honeymoon the week after the wedding and headed for Martinez, CA to explore John Muir's historic home. Candy and I both have a sincere appreciation for John Muir and his vision to protect Yosemite Valley and create a national park system. John Muir was the founder of the Sierra Club and was one of the few people in the late 1800s that opposed the virtually unchecked exploitation of Yosemite during the gold rush era of early California. Good karma was with us as we learned that John Muir week was in progress. To our delight, we scored tickets for the John Muir musical at the new John Muir Amphitheatre. Following our Muir Madness, we journeyed to Lake Tahoe, CA. We had planned to stay there most of the week; however, we were terribly disappointed with the over development of Lake Tahoe--especially after being immersed in John Muir history immediately beforehand! The south side of the lake is packed with casinos and traffic. After two hectic nights, we found a cabinette on the north side. We were in the area long enough to ride the famous "Flume Trail" around the eastern side of the lake. It took us five hours to complete the ride, but we experienced breathtaking views and NO MOTORIZED TRAFFIC! We did venture into one of the casinos the second night. We did some high-roller gambling and dropped five bucks of quarters! The best part of the casino was going to the interactive arcade--Candas racked up points on the ski simulator, and I earned a top score for the street bike racer because it handled like my racing bicycle! Our final stop was Candy's favorite place in the universe--the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains at Mammoth, CA. We stayed at the Mammoth Mountain Inn the rest of the week. The big NORBA race was the week before, so Mammoth was cleared out by the time we arrived. After the chaos in Lake Tahoe, the peace and quiet of Mammoth was refreshing. We did some MTB riding, hiking, walking, running, and just plain relaxing. We hiked up to the Minaret Falls near Devil's Postpile National Monument. We ran up to a vista point overlooking Devil's Postpile. Our mountain bike riding in Mammoth was around the ski run areas. We discovered a wonderful old lodge on our final bike ride as we dropped into the Twin Lakes area of Mammoth. The Tamarack Lodge was built in the 1920s and absolutely incredible. We were able to get reservations for dinner at the popular lodge restaurant and had the most romantic dinner of our trip later that evening. Candas just loved Mammoth and I loved seeing her so happy--I have really learned to enjoy this part of the Sierras with her. Our wedding and honeymoon were wonderful experiences for us. We have received numerous comments about the personal quality of the wedding ceremony--many people were very touched by our ceremonial bead exchange, the sage cleansing, the unique rock n' roll wedding soundtrack, and other aspects of our outdoor mountain wedding. Candas and I were happy to share these moments with our closest friends and family members...it was truly wonderful and so was the honeymoon journey...we are happy being renegades of funk in our own special ways...cheers! |
