“Hard Rock Health!”
I just attended two big rock concerts the last week. The first was Metallica’s “Summer Sanitarium” at the LA Coliseum with Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, & the Deftones. The next weekend I hooked it up for the 2003 Lollapalooza at Irvine Meadows featuring Jane’s Addiction, Audioslave, Incubus, Perfect Circle, and a Rio-type carnival atmosphere. Now you’re probably wondering what rock and roll has to do with health—actually plenty. Since graduating from high school, I’ve generally kept up with current pop culture whether it is in the form of rock concerts, art openings, or various readings and education. Most of these cultural adventures have been in LA or San Francisco and a few out of state (obviously I had to leave Bako to get the experience!). I have no scientific study or proof, but I’ve made some observations over the years about how rock and roll can keep one young—including myself. I’ve got to tell you it was cool as hell to be down for Metallica. To be at a cutting edge show—to be “young at heart” as Frank Sinatra sung is a great feeling. There is nothing that will wake the dead like a live Metallica show belting out Seek and Destroy until the speakers catch fire (This actually happened last weekend during this very song!).
Staying up with music and live shows has kept me young at heart. It makes me feel good. It gets me going—and it’s been really fun all of which has been good for my health. There is nothing worse than seeing someone from high school that is clueless about music! They seem so old and out of touch. The few people I know in Bako that keep up with music “after high school” are younger at heart than most locals here accustomed to hanging out on the couch drinkin’ a Bud and listening to oldies. True—there is life after Jimi Hendrix and Bad Company! My advice for a quick fix of youth is to find some new music and crank it up! Kick out some jams. Be young at heart. Find a good show in LA or even in Bako and hit the road. Music is invigorating if you let it be…it’s good for the soul. Plus if you’re listening to Metallica like I do it makes for a great workout while pumping some iron! Fear not to hear new music—fear aging before your time. I’ll take Metallica and robust health rather than slothful and boring elevator music any day. Rock on dudes! Next month—mobilizing the troops to protect our bike and walking paths from gang tagging morons, pervos, and anyone else threatening our family exercise environments…I’m mad as hell and it needs to STOP! |
