'Pedal for Pediatrics' to Benefit Children's Program at MemorialBy BOB SABERHAGEN, Californian correspondentThursday October 18, 2001, 11:18:26 PM GORMAN -- Bicycle riders will pedal for children Saturday in a ride dubbed "Pedal for Pediatrics," benefiting Bakersfield Memorial Hospital's pediatric program. Lebec resident and television personality John Schneider, star of the "Dukes of Hazzard" television series and featured in Warner Brothers' new series "Smallville," will join other celebrities and locals in the 12-mile ride sponsored by Children's Miracle Network on a six-mile portion of the old Ridge Route near Gorman. A barbecue and activities at Frazier Park's Frazier Mountain Park follow the race, which begins at 9 a.m. at the starting point three miles south of Highway 138 on Old Ridge Route Road. Guests joining Schneider include film actor and Twin Oaks resident Charles Napier, who appeared in the films "Silence of the Lambs," "Blues Brothers" and "The Philadelphia Story." Riders include veteran cyclists Ron Jones, noted for leading the team that won the 1996 Race Across America competition, setting a record time of 6 days, 5 hours and 4 minutes from Irvine to Savannah, Ga., and RAAM team navigator Jack Skaggs of Bakersfield. Skaggs, a Bakersfield CHP officer and the race's organizer, looks forward to riding the mountain course. "It's a short but challenging ride on a beautiful course," Skaggs said of the 12-mile round trip. "And it's for a great cause." Drawing prizes include a mountain bike, rack and helmet; portable CD player; Taft BMX Track passes, and lunch for two with John Schneider at a local restaurant. All participants receive T-shirts, food and drawing tickets. Registration opens at 8 a.m. at Frazier Mountain Park. Fees are $35 for single riders or $100 for a team of four. Riders under 18 must have their parents' permission. Frazier Park is located three miles west of Interstate 5 off the Frazier Park interchange. For information, call (661) 327-1792, ext. 4640. |
